Interior Design Reality vs. HGTV: Making It Real Part 2 – Getting the Facts
In our last blog, “Interior Design Reality vs. HGTV: Is it real” we uncovered the myths of interior design shows, not only on HGTV but also other channels that show ways to transform your space. What we do not see on these shows are the behind the scenes workers and donations by major retailers that help to bring these transformations in on budget and on time.
Now that you have watched some of these shows, and have an idea of what you want for your space, the information here will go a long way toward making your vision a reality.
Top 5 Ways to Make Your Interior Design a Reality
When you tune in and watch your favorite interior design reality television show on HGTV, you do not see all the behind-the-scenes workers helping to transform a room in just two days. While the designers are out shopping for special furnishings, there are crews of people scraping, building, painting, and working their magic while the cameras are not rolling.
That leads us to the top 5 ways you can make your interior design into a reality:
Interior Design Reality #1 – Time
Any space transformation is going to take time – and planning. If you are a do-ityourselfer, you will need to do some research online before getting started. Search for how to strip wallpaper and how long it will take. Is there going to be prep work involved before you can paint the stripped walls? This is not a one day job for one person.
If you are working with an interior designer, do not expect to have a completed room plan created within 4 hours after your initial meeting. Ask questions, know what to expect and when. It is important to keep a clear line of communication and expectations. Of course, sometimes even the best laid out plans get stuck along the way. Always expect the unexpected – how they get resolved is the most important factor.
Interior Design Reality #3 – Planning
We have already talked a bit about planning, both in time and money, but that is not all you need to consider. A space plan is important so that you know how much room you have to work with. You may want seating for 12 in your living room, but if only a small loveseat and one chair will fit, you are not being realistic about your space. If you are working with an interior designer, you will be able to create this space plan together to satisfy your desires realistically. If you are doing it yourself, then take photos and measurements of your room and speak with an expert at your chosen furniture store.
Interior Design Reality #4 – Style
Your entire home is traditional, but you just saw a beautiful contemporary
transformation on your favorite interior design reality show. Now you want the same look for your family room. Here are some things to consider:
– If the space opens up to the rest of the house, it will look out of place.
– Will you actually be happy with this type of style for many years to come?
– What will you do with all the existing accessories that will not fit in with the new style?
– Is this new style going to be functional for you and your family?
Once again, being honest with yourself and communicating with your designer can save you a lot of time and money. Just because you like something on television does not mean it is right for you.
Interior Design Reality #5 – Results
In the end, it is not about what the designer wants, but how to achieve your
vision. On the interior design reality shows, when the cameras leave, so do the designers. In real life, I as your designer, am still here to answer questions or help you find that unique piece down the road when you are ready.
Designing a new space is a personal experience that should express who you are while maintaining the functionality that you need in your everyday life. The right designer can help make your interior design vision a reality.
